President Dalia Grybauskaitė

Toast Remarks by President Dalia Grybauskaitė at official dinner in honor of President Salome Zourabichvili of Georgia

Your Excellency Madam President,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am delighted to welcome the President of Georgia in Lithuania on one of her first foreign visits.

Lithuania and Georgia are two brave nations who love and cherish freedom.

Although our countries are separated by thousands of kilometers, we feel very close. As we look at each other, we see similar historical experience, a shared spirit of resistance to occupiers, and determination to preserve our culture and national identity.

Last year, we celebrated with a feeling of great pride the centennials of our restored statehood. When I visited Tbilisi in May, I was truly happy to note that the name of your country – Sakartvelo – sounds the same in both languages, Lithuanian and Kartvelian, as well as to thank you that the name of our country is Lietuva in Kartvelian – and sounds just like in Lithuanian.

We understand each other very well because today once again we face similar threats and challenges. A part of Sakartvelo is still occupied, and militaristic actions by an unfriendly neighbor pose a serious threat to Lithuania and the entire international community.

This is why we actively support Georgia’s aspirations to move closer to the European Union and NATO and to secure assistance from committed allies. We firmly believe that your country can make a significant contribution, through historical and political experience, to building a secure and democratic Europe.

Your Excellency Madam President,

Strong women have always held a special place in the history of Georgia. Back in the Middle Ages, Queen Tamar demonstrated to the world what can be achieved with intelligence, resolve and effective leadership.

These days, too, we see that in difficult times women take on responsibility with the same confidence and the same sense of responsibility for the future of their country.

I would like to raise my glass to friendship between Lithuania and Georgia – a true friendship that withstands distances, mountains and seas!

ლიეტუვა-საქართველოს მეგობრობას გაუმარჯოს!

Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania
