2018-07-25

Wednesday, July 25, Vilnius President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented letters of credence to Rita Kazragienė, Lithuanian Ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium.

The President and the newly appointed Ambassador discussed cooperation between Lithuania and Belgium as the two countries worked together to strengthen European and transatlantic security and to implement the decisions made at the NATO summit in Brussels. Belgium is Lithuania’s important ally with its troops deployed to NATO's enhanced forward presence in our country. This coming autumn, Belgian jet fighters will conduct their eighth rotation in NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission.

Lithuania and Belgium stand in the same line on key European issues and should therefore continue their collaborative work in the European Union. Both countries are determined to ensure a strong EU response to hybrid threats, boost Europe’s growth and build the resilience of the eurozone to global economic challenges.

The President underlined that it was important for Lithuania to expand bilateral relations with Belgium, especially in business and research. Both countries are connected through close business ties with Flanders, but Lithuania still needs to make itself visible and known across all Belgian regions. There is a big potential for cooperation in liquefied natural gas, life sciences, laser technologies, and many other sectors. The President placed special focus on advancing cultural ties between the two countries and consolidating the large Lithuanian community in Belgium.

Ambassador Rita Kazragienė previously worked in the Lithuanian embassy in Washington, Lithuania’s Permanent Mission to UN Office in Geneva and Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York. Before her ambassadorial posting to Belgium, she was Ambassador at large at Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Lithuania’s ambassador to the Kingdom of Belgium is also accredited to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
