Wednesday, September 26, Vilnius – During her visit to New York, President Dalia Grybauskaitė presented the Grand Cross of Commander of the Order of Vytautas the Great awarded on July 6 to Senator John McCain for merits to Lithuania to his widow, Cindy McCain.
According to the President, John McCain was a true friend of Lithuania and a strong supporter of our freedom and independence. The Senator had contributed in a major way to building up support for Lithuania’s defense and security. He actively promoted close ties between Europe and the United States and stood for transatlantic unity and cooperation. He always underscored the importance of military support to Europe, placing special focus on helping our countries to defend themselves from any kind of threats.
During his last visit to Lithuania at the end of 2016, Senator John McCain and President Dalia Grybauskaitė discussed defense cooperation between Lithuania and the United States as well as security in Europe and the region.
John McCain died this past August at the age of 81.
In New York, where the President is on a working visit, she will deliver a speech at the United Nations General Assembly. Later, she will chair a high-level event initiated by Lithuania on economic growth through women’s empowerment. Taking part will be the UN Secretary-General, the Presidents of Croatia, Estonia and Malta, the Prime Ministers of Norway and Bangladesh, the President of the World Bank Group, and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
