Monday, December 10, Oslo - President Dalia Grybauskaitė together with European leaders and the EU's highest-ranking officials participated in a banquet hosted by the Prime Minister of Norway, Jens Stoltenberg, on the occasion of the award of the Nobel Peace Prize. The heads of state and government discussed the economic situation in Europe and the decisions important for the future of Lithuania and the EU.
"Dialogue and peaceful negotiations have ensured long-term peace on the European continent. Today we confront new challenges - economic stagnation and financial problems. Prompt and effective decisions that represent the interests of all member states are needed to ensure economic stability in Europe," the President said.
According to the President, in the near future the EU countries will have to agree on the Community's multiannual financial framework and the measures to strengthen the banking union in the euro zone. On Thursday, the leaders of the EU member states who will gather for a European Council meeting in Brussels will discuss how to boost economic growth and reinforce supervision of the euro zone's banks.
