Saturday, July 28, London - President Dalia Grybauskaitė visited our country's athletes in the Olympic Village. After awarding a symbolic discus to Virgilijus Alekna, the flag bearer of the Lithuanian National Olympic Team, and handing over a torch with a symbolic Olympic flame, the President went to watch Giedrius Titenis' swimming in qualification competition.
"This is an Olympic flame the Lithuanian people have carried in their hearts and hands. This torch contains the warmth of all Lithuanians. I believe that it will help you to compete and win," the President said while handing over the torch to the captain of the Lithuanian National Basketball Team Linas Kleiza.
Having passed the torch which had been carried by Lithuanian people, Dalia Grybauskaitė gave a loaf of bread to Lithuanian trap shooter Daina Gudzinevičiūtė and a symbolic discus to discuss thrower Virgilijus Alekna.
"This discus is s symbol of peace, power, perseverance and fortitude. I wish that it brings success both to you, who are competing here in the Olympics, and to all people of Lithuania. Being here is already victory. I hope that more important victories are waiting for you in these Olympic Games. Your victories are the victories of the whole Lithuania," the President said on awarding the discus.
The President underlined that the Olympics were an extraordinary event which brought together not only athletes but also all Lithuanians across the world. Inviting the Olympian athletes to compete fairly, she extended to them best wishes for success, resolve and strength.
During her visit in London, the President also participated in a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by Queen Elizabeth II for the heads of state and government, and watched the opening ceremony of the thirtieth Summer Olympic Games. Tomorrow evening, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will keep up the spirit of the Lithuanian National Basketball Team during their match against Argentina's team.
