President calls on fellow citizens to be united in building Lithuania every day

Thursday, February 16, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended the official ceremony of hoisting the flags of the three Baltic States in Simonas Daukantas Square.

"Today as we stand and watch our national tricolor going up, we feel deeply grateful to those who turned the twilight of February 16th into the dawn of hope. Twenty signatories - and the many brave patriots behind them - proclaimed the restoration of Lithuanian independence. They inspired future generations to cherish freedom and to fight for it," the President said.
Dalia Grybauskaitė called on her fellow citizens to learn, from the Independence Act and the events of those times inspired by steadfast values, the spirit of true principles, responsibility and unity.
We should be responsible for our country and its future, she said, with no compromises on corruption, narrow group self-interests, and disrespect for the human person, the law or the state.
According to the President, work or living in other countries should not prevent us from working for the good of our homeland as Lithuania is where there is at least one Lithuanian: "We have to ensure that neither distances nor differences hinder our joint efforts to make Lithuania better. So let us all stand together," the President spoke to the people gathered in the square.
President Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that a great and rich history of Lithuania can become a source of inspiration for everyone looking for the solutions in the deeds and actions of tomorrow.
After the ceremony in Simonas Daukantas Square, the President will go to the Vilnius Cathedral to celebrate Holy Mass.

The ceremonial commemoration of February 16 will be concluded with a concert at the National Philharmonic Hall, patronized by the President, of the works specially created by composer Linas Rimša for February 16 and performed for the first time.
