President receives letters of credence from Ambassador of the Order of Malta


Wednesday, March 21, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from the Ambassador of the Order of Malta, Christian Baron von Bechtolsheim.

The President and the Ambassador of the Order of Malta - one of the major Christian humanitarian organizations - discussed the volunteer work and support initiatives in Lithuania.

According to the President, the activity of the Order of Malta in Lithuania is a perfect example of real-life mutual assistance. Most Lithuanians are positively minded and understand the importance of helping each other, she said.

The Lithuanian leader and the incoming Ambassador also touched upon other mutual assistance campaigns in Lithuania, including the annual Christmas Charity Fair organized at the Presidential Palace by non-governmental organizations.

Christian von Bechtolsheim (42) is the Order of Malta's third ambassador to Lithuania. He resides in Germany.

The diplomatic corps of the Order of Malta consist of professional diplomats who have retired from active service and wish to engage in volunteer work, as well as of the members of the Order who have experience in international relations.

The mission of the ambassadors is strictly humanitarian and is aimed at facilitating the humanitarian aid where public needs are met.
