Strong and united EU is a common goal of Lithuania and Germany


Thursday, September 20, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with Ruprecht Polenz, chairman of the foreign committee of the German Bundestag, to discuss the bilateral relations, cooperation in the European Union, EU external relations, and topical issues in the field of energy.

The President underlined that in relations with third countries the EU should ensure equal protection of the interests of all its member states, including Lithuania. This is particularly important in energy area.

According to the President, the European Commission's decision to launch an investigation into monopolistic dominance of Gazprom is an example of European solidarity demonstrating that the EU has really started protecting the interests of its member states. The President also thanked Germany for its support in implementing the Third Energy Package.

Dalia Grybauskaitė noted that a strong euro as well as economic recovery and competitiveness of the EU are in the common interest of Lithuania and Germany. According to the President, Germany as the largest member state has a special role in addressing the issues in the euro zone and the entire European Union.

The President also stressed that Lithuania and Germany had the same position on the issues of key importance to the EU. Both countries enjoy very good mutual cooperation, she said and wished to continue strengthening bilateral parliamentary relations.
