President Dalia Grybauskaitė

Strong Europe – common interest of Lithuania and Monaco

Monday, October 15, Vilnius - President Dalia Grybauskaitė received Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco, who have arrived on an official visit to Lithuania. This is the first visit by the Head of State of Monaco to our country. Lithuania and Monaco established diplomatic relations a year ago.

"I am delighted to welcome for the first time the Prince of Monaco in Lithuania. We are partners in Europe. We share common values and we face similar challenges. Standing in solidarity, we will deal with issues of importance to Lithuania and Monaco more effectively in Europe and at international level," the President said.

The main points of discussion were Lithuania's ongoing preparations for EU's presidency in 2013, relations between the European Union and Monaco, and the situation in the euro zone.

According to the President, the crisis in the euro zone has become a serious challenge for the whole of Europe. Its impact is felt by both Lithuania and Monaco. Therefore, Lithuania - during its EU presidency in the second half of 2013 - will actively support financial discipline and other EU decisions aimed at ensuring financial stability and economic growth.

Among the other issues discussed was cooperation in energy security, energy efficiency, nuclear safety, and environmental protection. The President underlined the need to apply international nuclear safety standards in respect of all nuclear power plants, including those planned for construction in Lithuania's neighborhood.

The President also stressed that the Baltic Sea is one of the most polluted seas in the world and the efforts of all the countries along its shores and the attention of the international community are needed for its ecological rehabilitation. Prince Albert II is an active environmentalist particularly concerned with ecological issues.

During the visit at the Presidential Palace, the Heads of State of Lithuania and Monaco also exchanged the state decorations.
