The Baltic Presidents will meet in Raudondvaris

Monday, November 26, Vilnius - At the invitation of President Dalia Grybauskaitė, a meeting of the Presidents of the three Baltic States will be held on Wednesday 28 November in Raudondvaris Castle, Kaunas region. This year Lithuania is chairing cooperation among the Baltic States, therefore it will host the annual meeting of the Presidents.

Key topics on the agenda of the meeting with Latvian President Andris Bērziņš and Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will be the implementation of power interconnections that are of strategic importance to the Baltic countries and possible joint action in negotiating the EU financial framework 2014-2020. Failing to reach an agreement on allocation of the EU multiannual budget last Friday, the EU member states decided to have a break in negotiations until early 2013.

The strengthening of energy independence and appropriate allocation of the seven-year EU budget for sensitive spheres of the Baltic countries' economy, the President said, is essential for successful development of the region and for the well-being of the people. According to the President, only through joint effort and smooth coordination of action we will achieve the maximum possible result.

The meeting will also address topical issues of the region and European Union, Lithuania's preparation for the EU's Presidency in the second half of 2013 as well as other cooperation issues.
