President Dalia Grybauskaitė

The EU approved action plan against disinformation

Friday, December 14, Brussels The European Council approved the action plan against disinformation and urged to put it into effect so that elections to the European Parliament next year are free, fair and secure.

President Dalia Grybauskaitė underlined that EU member states would be able to fight effectively disinformation from unfriendly countries only if they acted together; therefore, Lithuania supported the action plan.

The Commission and the European External Action Service proposed to establish a rapid reaction system at the European level, which would allow EU countries to respond to disinformation in a coordinated manner, to share information and to ensure swift reaction to any disruptive interference in the democratic election process.

The action plan provides for collaborative work with social networks to prevent the spread of fake news. It also sets forth measures to strengthen public resilience.

According to the President, Lithuania’s experience in bringing public, civic and media initiatives together to counter fake news across information fields may prove to be useful to other EU countries.

Next year will see three elections held in Lithuania: municipal in March, presidential and European in May. Therefore, fighting disinformation becomes even more important.
