The President congratulated Afghanistan on national day


Sunday, August 19, Vilnius – President Dalia Grybauskaitė extended congratulations to President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and to all Afghan people on the 99th anniversary of Independence Day.

According to the President, citizens of Afghanistan are confronted with enormous economic and political challenges and threat of terrorism in their pursuit of modern, democratic and prosperous state. Nevertheless, in the face of hardship, the Afghan people have bravely accepted the responsibility for safe and peaceful future of their state. The President expressed hope that Afghanistan would have much determination in rallying groups of society that are interested in dialogue so that the work done for the benefit of the state would become a measure in gathering and uniting people.

Dalia Grybauskaitė underscored that it was paramount to ensure national security and curb terrorism in pursuing national stability and economic growth. According to the President, the effort of Afghanistan to ensure a comprehensive security of its citizens, defend their rights, strengthen civil society and military was supported as it was resolutely reaffirmed in NATO summit last month. According to the President, to this end, Lithuania and NATO allies have raised their contribution and military support to Afghanistan. The support for the effort of the Afghan people to protect peace and national unity in Afghanistan will continue.

Dalia Grybauskaitė wished the President and all the people of Afghanistan peace, concord and prosperity.
