The President congratulates Sakartvelo on centennial of the state

Saturday, May 26, Tbilisi, Sakartvelo – President Dalia Grybauskaitė attended festive events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the First Republic of Sakartvelo.

Dalia Grybauskaitė went to the celebration at the invitation of President Giorgi Margvelashvili. The President of Sakartvelo also marked the centennial of the restoration of the state of Lithuania together with the Lithuanian people in Vilnius on February 16.

Dalia Grybauskaitė congratulated the people of Sakartvelo in Kartvelian during the solemn oath taking ceremony held in Tbilisi’s main Freedom Square.

The President underscored that Lithuania gave a special present as it introduced the authentic name of the state – Sakartvelo – into use of the Lithuanian language. This is one more proof that the people of Lithuania and Sakartvelo enjoy exceptional bond of friendship.

Lithuania and Sakartvelo share not only similar history and a hard path of surmounted challenges but also a common objective to create free and independent states, strong in their determination to take responsibility for their own future.

The people of Lithuania have whole-heartedly joined all Sakartvelians in the celebrations. In Vilnius, today, the Hill of Three Crosses, the White Bridge, the Green Bridge and the Mindaugas Bridge will be lit in the colors of the flag of Sakartvelo while the Presidential Palace has been decorated with a sign “GE 100”.

The President of the European Commission, presidents of Latvia, Poland, Finland, Slovakia and Armenia, parliamentary speakers of Estonia and Ukraine, as well as other foreign government members have also attended the events in Tbilisi. The Lithuanian Armed Forces Orchestra played during the ceremony.

Before the festive events, the President opened the Lithuanian Language and Culture Center in new facilities in Tbilisi, where the students of Sakartvelo have been studying Lithuanian language free of charge since 2012. Some 200 young people have already used this possibility. This is one more way to strengthen cultural ties between both nations.
