The President received Person of the Year Award

Friday, 23 September, New York – President Dalia Grybauskaitė received the Person of the Year Award from the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture during her working visit to New York. The President was awarded for her substantial contribution to the promotion of Lithuanian national identity and culture.

The Person of the Year Award was established as early as in 1969. Each year, this award recognizes persons with special merits to Lithuania, its culture, and progress.

“No matter where we happen to live, we all are united by strong feelings for our homeland that inspire us to work together for the present and future of Lithuania. We will hand it over to new generations as it was handed to us by our parents,” the President said in accepting the award.

According to the President, Lithuania highly acknowledges the fact that it can always count on the Lithuanian American community. Dalia Grybauskaitė underscored its substantial contribution to Lithuania’s struggle for independence at the end of the last century as well as its great input to consolidating the partnership between Lithuania and the United States – so important for Lithuania’s security.

The Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture was founded in 1966 by Stanley Balzekas, Honorary Consul of Lithuania, from his own funds. The Museum features Lithuanian culture and history, it invites to concerts, films, and seminars. During the first decades of its existence, the Museum focused on presenting its visitors with uncontested documentary evidence that Lithuania had a right to exist as an independent state. It encouraged all Lithuanians on the other side of the Atlantic to seek by every possible means the re-establishment of Lithuania’s independence.
