The President to visit Qatar: gas supply and economic cooperation on agenda


Friday, April 27, Vilnius - On 29 April, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will pay a working visit to Qatar. During the visit, the President will meet with His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, and other representatives of the country.

It will be the first high-level bilateral meeting of the leaders of Lithuania and Qatar. Although we mark the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries this year, until now Lithuania practically has not had economic contacts with this country of the Arabian Peninsula which is the largest supplier of liquefied gas in the world.

During the President's visit, the government representatives of Qatar will be introduced to the liquefied natural gas terminal under construction in Lithuania and the prospects for gas supply to Lithuania will be discussed. The agenda of the meeting also includes the signing of the Agreement on Economic, Commercial and Technical Cooperation between Qatar and Lithuania aimed to promote the mutually beneficial economic and investment projects.

Qatar is the second highest per capita income country in the world (USD 102,700 in 2011), with 19 percent economic growth. Budget surplus is a common situation in Qatar; therefore, it is looking for opportunities to make foreign investments in the sectors with high value added perspectives. 30 billion dollars for foreign investments are planned this year alone.

The President during her visit in Qatar will be accompanied by the Minister of Energy Arvydas Sekmokas, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Asta Skaisgirytė-Liauškienė, Managing Director of "Klaipėdos nafta" Rokas Masiulis, ant Director of the LNG terminal Rolandas Zukas.
