The President will make a working visit to Ukraine


Friday, December 9, Vilnius – On Monday, December 12, President Dalia Grybauskaitė is going on a working visit to Kyiv where she will meet with President Petro Poroshenko and take part in the ninth meeting of the Council of Presidents of Lithuania and Ukraine.

The two presidents will discuss Ukraine's eurointegration and the possibility for Ukrainian nationals to enjoy visa free travel in the European Union as soon as possible. They will review the ongoing reforms and the security situation in Ukraine as well as the implementation of the Minsk agreements. The meeting will also focus on fighting deep-rooted corruption. Having traveled the long road to transparency, Lithuania has valuable experience to share with Ukraine. In the Corruption Perception Index, Lithuania ranks 32, while Ukraine ranks 130.

As Lithuania and Ukraine celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations, President Dalia Grybauskaitė will open Lithuania Square in the center of Kyiv.

She will also open the Second Lithuania-Ukraine Business Forum which is expected to gather around 200 participants from both countries. Lithuania and Ukraine maintain close economic ties, with the supermarket chain Novus and the paper and wood industry group Grigeo operating there. Lithuanian companies Vičiūnai, Žemaitijos Pienas and others successfully export food products to Ukraine. Last year, bilateral trade turnover amounted to 840 million euros.

A number of important documents will be signed during the President’s visit in Kyiv. The two heads of state will sign the roadmap of the development of strategic partnership between Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania for 2017-2018. They will also issue a joint statement on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Ukraine.

Among the other documents to be signed will be bilateral agreements on environmental protection and health care.
